Introduced in 1999, the U.S. Mint's 50-State Quarters Program was a ten-year project, with five quarters per year, issued between 1999 and 2008 honoring all 50 states. The statehood quarters were issued in the order in which their states ratified the Constitution and were brought into the union. At the end of the U.S. Mint 50 State Quarters issue, a new series was issued in 2009 honoring the District of Columbia, and U.S. Territories--the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
The obverse side of the quarters is the well-known portrait of George Washington. In addition, the phrases "United States of America," "Quarter Dollar," "Liberty," and "In God We Trust" all appear on the obverse to accommodate state/territory designs on the reverse.
